Bewl water is located just south of Tunbridge Wells off the A21 near Lamberhurst. This large reservoir [770 acres] is the home of Stillwater fly fishing in the South East of England being its largest water. Andy considers Bewl his home water having fished it for over forty years. The season starts here in late March and runs through to February the following year. In the first few weeks of the season we’ll be searching the newly flooded margins for patrolling rainbow trout that will be seeking the larvae and grubs of flies that will hatch later in the spring. We will be using a variety of methods, usually from an anchored boat, as the fish will be most concentrated on the downwind shores within a few yards [meters] of the bank which means drifting is less effective unless we can find drifts parallel to the bank. Things really get exciting towards the back end of April when we start drift fishing. With the water now warming the trout leave the margins and spread out across the whole of the reservoir. We now need to track them down while fishing the upper layers of water. Much to most new anglers surprise the trout are rarely far from the surface but getting the right balance of tackle and the correct method is essential for success. These skills take years to perfect but a day afloat will further your understanding. Learn how to fish from a drifting boat, the importance of using “teams” of flies, and the process of systematically searching water for feeding fish. Learn how the wind changes the fishes location from day to day, in fact a day or two with me is a sure way to “fast track” your understanding of how to catch Trout on reservoirs across the country. May is a magical month for any fly angler it’s often the best month of the year, fish are everywhere and feeding hard. It’s possible to catch on most methods, so take your pick, for me if conditions are suitable then “dry fly” fishing is my favourite method. It takes patience and confidence as we don’t often see signs of trout near the surface on Bewl nowadays but that doesn’t mean the fish are deep! This is the undoing of many inexperience fly anglers when they venture out onto Bewl. Our day starts at 9am at the “fishing lodge” where I’ll run through the tackle and tactics we’ll be using, our day normally finishes at 6pm. Most anglers prefer to use their own gear but I can provide tackle, flies, leader material and patience. I normally stay on the water all day so bring food, drink [no alcohol] and suitable clothing. I’m happy to guide up to two anglers if they are reasonably competent casters. What’s provided? Tackle can be provided, but most fly anglers prefer to use their own. The cost of fishing tickets and boat hire is covered in your booking. What to bring? You will need to bring suitable clothing, plus food and drink, no alcohol please. Where to stay?
